چکیده
Research Forester, Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station, Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Riverside, Calif. the area of nature conservation, Kruger, Naveh, and Tyrrel expressed the need to maintain or increase species diversity. Also in the interest of nature conservation, Kruger discussed the need to control invasive exotics and to limit commercial wildflower harvesting in South Africa. Timber (Shea, these proceedings), fruit (Canas and others, these proceedings), and energy (Naveh, Tyrrel, these proceedings) production and mining (Bolander, Shea, these proceedings) were objectives to be managed in some regions. One of the principal objectives of this symposium was to provide a forum for exchange of information on a multinational scale. The purpose of this session, held on the opening day of the symposium, was to provide the participants with an overview of how Mediterranean-type ecosystems are being managed around the world. Each of the speakers in this session represented a different region; together, they covered the Mediterraneantype ecosystems on five continents. The speakers were asked to relate the following information for the regions they represented: (1) Object of Management, (2) history of Vegetation and Perception, (3) Constraints on Management, and (4) Role of Research.

Utilization of Biomass in Mediterranean-Type Ecosystems: A Summary and Synthesis1
Botanist, Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station, Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Riverside, Calif. This session on the potential of Mediterraneantype ecosystems to supply biomass as a supplemental source of energy is a natural result of the present worldwide shortage of low-cost fuel. Some of these ecosystems are highly productive, partly because the summer droug...

Supervisory Soil Scientist, Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station, Tempe, Arizona; and Soil Microbiologist, Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station, Glendora, California. The weathering of parent rock may be an important source of some nutrients. The rates of weathering of the different parent rock materials vary and affect the inherent fertility and productivity of a...
متن کاملAn outlook on the diversity of polypores shared between Iran and the Mediterranean area
Polypore fungi are an important group of wood-inhabiting basidiomycetes that have significant roles in biomass recycling in forests and woodland ecosystems. Figures on the polypore diversity in Iran have been partly made available through few checklists, but there have been no comparative studies on the pattern of geographic distribution of the species. The prevalence of the Mediterranean biocl...
متن کاملPerspectives of Big Data Quality in Smart Service Ecosystems (Quality of Design and Quality of Conformance)
Despite the increasing importance of data and information quality, current research related to Big Data quality is still limited. It is particularly unknown how to apply previous data quality models to Big Data. In this paper we review Big Data quality research from several perspectives and apply a known quality model with its elements of conformance to specification and design in the context o...
متن کاملGlucose 6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency in Tehran, Zanjan and Sistan-Balouchestan Provinces: Prevalence and Frequency of Mediterranean Variant of G6PD
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an enzymopathy affecting about 400 millionpeople worldwide. The distribution of G6PD deficiency and the molecular genetics of this enzyme vary widelyamong different ethnic groups. The aim of this study was to find out the frequency of G6PD deficiency andcharacterize the Mediterranean type mutation in deficient individuals ...
